By Keith R. Wheeler (R-Oswego)
State Representative, 50th District
I am participating in the Polar Plunge for Special Olympics Illinois this Sunday, March 8 at Loon Lake in Yorkville. Ours is one of eight plunges across the state to raise money for Special Olympics, a tremendous organization whose mission is to “provide year-round sports training and athletic competition in a variety of Olympic-type sports for children and adults with intellectual disabilities, giving them continuing opportunities to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, experience joy and participate in a sharing of gifts, skills and friendship with their families, other Special Olympics athletes and the community.”
Myself and the other contestants will be braving the icy waters of Loon Lake to support this great cause. This will be my first year as a participant. The plunge starts at 1pm with check-in time starting at 11am. Registration is at the Kendall County Fairgrounds located at 10826 Illinois Route 71 in Yorkville.
If you would like to donate to our plunge, please visit the Special Olympics Illinois website at www.soill.org and click on the Calendar of Events page; then select the “Yorkville Polar Plunge” on March 8. As I write this, 530 participants have signed up and a total of $63,720 has been raised. We can far exceed that by Sunday with your help.
Thank you to everyone who has donated and volunteered to support Special Olympics. If you’re looking for a chance to make a difference in people’s lives, this is an opportunity you shouldn’t pass up.
